Recycled nylon and polyester in yoga wear

Recycled fabrics are now a normal request in yoga apparel programs. The fabric side is usually straightforward. The claim side, what you can say and how you prove it, is where buyers need a plan.

What buyers are asking for

Many brands now want some or all of their leggings, bras and sets made from recycled nylon or recycled polyester blended with spandex. The motivations vary: retailer requirements, customer expectations, or a brand position built around materials. Whatever the reason, the request has two parts. The first is a fabric that performs like the virgin version. The second is a claim that is accurate and backed by documents.

This note covers both, and the step most first-time buyers miss: deciding the claim before booking the fabric, because the claim decides which documents you need from the supply chain.

Does recycled fabric perform differently?

In a well-made fabric, recycled nylon or polyester knit with spandex can feel and perform close to its virgin counterpart. Buyers evaluate it the same way: composition, finished weight, hand, opacity, recovery, pilling and colorfastness. Reference ranges still apply. A recycled nylon and spandex legging fabric is judged against the same 230-280 GSM performance range, and a recycled polyester and spandex fabric against the same gym and fitness range.

The differences tend to show up in two places:

  • Color consistency: recycled feedstock can vary, and some recycled yarns dye slightly differently from virgin yarn. Approve lab dips on the recycled fabric itself, and check shade between production lots against the approved standard.
  • Availability: not every quality, weight or finish is stocked in a recycled version. A specific brushed or textured fabric may need to be developed, which adds time.

Test the recycled fabric to the same methods you would use for the virgin one, and never assume the virgin fabric's results carry over. The nylon vs polyester note covers the fiber choice itself.

How GRS works for a buyer

The scheme buyers meet most often for recycled content is GRS, the Global Recycled Standard. Two thresholds matter, and they are often confused.

GRS thresholds (scheme rules; confirm the current version with the certifier)
Recycled content in the productWithin GRS scope?GRS label use on product
Below 20%NoNo
At least 20%, below 50%Yes, the product can be certifiedNo product label; describe the content accurately
At least 50%YesLabel use possible, subject to scheme rules

A legging fabric with recycled nylon and virgin spandex has a recycled share below the nylon share, so check the actual recycled percentage of the finished fabric, not just of the yarn. As with every scheme, certification has to cover each step of the chain to support a claim on the finished garment.

Writing the claim

The FTC Green Guides advise against unqualified environmental claims. A product page that says "eco-friendly leggings" is hard to defend. A page that says "made with recycled nylon, see label for fiber content" is specific and checkable. A few practical rules:

  • State what is recycled and, where you can document it, the share. If only the main fiber is recycled, do not imply the whole garment is.
  • Do not turn a recycled-content fact into a broad sustainability promise.
  • Keep the claim on the hang tag, product page and line sheet identical, and keep the supporting documents on file.
  • Re-check claims when the fabric changes. A reorder on a different quality may not carry the same content.

The sustainable yoga wear page shows how material claims are phrased across the site.

Other chemistry questions that come with recycled programs

Buyers who care about recycled content usually ask about chemistry too. Three items often come up together:

  • Harmful substances: OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests textiles by product class, with class II for skin contact. Where held by the mill, it is verified by number lookup.
  • Mill chemical management: bluesign is a chemical management system for mills. It describes the mill's system, not a recycled-content claim.
  • PFAS: California AB 1817 restricts intentionally added PFAS in textile articles from 2025, and other states have similar laws. Water-repellent or stain-resistant finishes are the usual place to check. Confirm current state requirements; see PFAS-free activewear.

Testing plan for recycled fabric

PropertyMethodWhy it matters for recycled
WeightISO 3801 / ASTM D3776, tolerance about plus or minus 5%Confirms the recycled quality matches the approved weight
Stretch and recoveryASTM D2594Checks that the recycled base recovers like the reference
PillingASTM D4970 / ISO 12945-2Yarn differences can change pilling behavior
ColorfastnessAATCC 61, AATCC 15 / ISO 105-E04, AATCC 8Dye behavior can differ from virgin yarn
Dimensional changeAATCC 135Confirms the fabric is stable after laundering

Documents to keep on file

A recycled claim is only as strong as the paper behind it. Before bulk, agree with the desk which documents will come with the order, and keep them with the program file for as long as the product is on sale. A sensible set usually includes:

  • The signed fabric sheet showing the fiber composition, including which fiber is recycled and its share.
  • The certificate details for each certified party in the chain, checked by number lookup, where a scheme claim is made.
  • The documentation the scheme uses to link certified material to your specific shipment, where applicable.
  • Test reports on the production fabric for the properties in the table above.
  • The final wording of the claim as used on the hang tag, label and product page.

If a retailer or marketplace asks you to substantiate the claim, this file is what you send. If a reorder moves to a different mill or quality, start a new file rather than assuming the old documents still apply.

Where recycled fits in the line

Many brands start with recycled content in the core pieces that sell every season, such as the main legging and bra, because the volume makes the documentation effort worthwhile and the claim is visible where customers look first. Seasonal prints and small drops can follow once the supply chain is proven. Other brands begin with one recycled capsule to test the response before converting the core. Either path works, as long as each style's claim matches its own fabric.

Timing and minimums

Recycled versions of common qualities may be stocked; less common weights and finishes may need development, and certified chains add documentation steps. Reference sampling is 7-15 days and bulk is 30-45 days after sample approval and fabric availability, so fabric availability is the variable to confirm first. Reference MOQs are on the MOQ and lead time page and are confirmed in writing for each program.

Next step

Tell the desk which styles you want in recycled fabric, the claim you intend to make and any retailer requirements. The desk will check which partner mills can supply the quality with documents that support that claim, and set up the fabric sheet and test plan. Use the quote form to start.

Questions buyers ask

Does recycled nylon feel different from virgin nylon?

A well-made recycled nylon and spandex fabric can feel close to the virgin version. Evaluate it the same way, on finished swatches, and test it rather than assuming the virgin fabric's results apply.

What recycled share does GRS require?

GRS covers products with at least 20% recycled material, and GRS label use on a product requires at least 50%. Check the recycled share of the finished fabric, not only the yarn.

Can I call recycled leggings sustainable?

Avoid unqualified claims under the FTC Green Guides. State what is recycled and, where documented, the share, and keep supporting documents on file.

Do recycled fabrics take longer to source?

Common qualities may be stocked, but specific weights or finishes may need development and certified chains add documentation steps. Confirm fabric availability first.

Send a style reference, the fabric you have in mind and a quantity range. The desk replies in writing with a sampling route and the open questions.
