Yoga shorts programs: bike shorts, lined shorts and hot yoga shorts

Shorts look like a small garment, but leg openings that ride up and liners that twist are among the most common reasons yoga shorts come back. Here is how the desk briefs shorts to partner factories.

Fitted bike shorts and a lined loose yoga short folded side by side in navy and stone colors

Three families of yoga shorts

Yoga shorts fall into three families, and each has its own construction logic. Fitted bike shorts are a cropped legging and follow legging specs. Lined loose shorts have a light outer shell and an inner brief or compression liner. Hot yoga shorts are minimal, fitted and built to stay put when wet. Men's shorts are covered on the men's yoga wear page, but they share many of the same decisions.

Bike shorts

Bike shorts take the waistband, gusset and fabric of a legging and stop at mid-thigh. Because they are so close to a legging, many brands offer them in the same fabric and colors so they can be sold as a set with a bra. The decisions that matter are the inseam, the hem finish and the opacity at the seat.

The hem is where bike shorts fail. A plain coverstitched hem can ride up the thigh in walking and in seated poses. Options include a slightly wider leg band, a bonded hem with more grip, or a knitted hem zone on seamless shorts. Silicone grip tape is a choice on cycling garments, but many yoga buyers prefer a clean hem. Review the sample in a walking test and a seated forward fold.

Inseam options are a merchandising decision. Common practice is to offer a shorter and a longer length, with the inseam for each size confirmed on the tech pack. A longer inseam reduces chafing on the inner thigh; a shorter one suits hot yoga and summer.

Lined loose shorts

Lined shorts combine a loose outer shell with an inner liner that provides coverage and support. The liner can be a brief, a short compression liner or a longer fitted liner. The decisions are:

  • Liner type and length, and whether the liner is attached at the waistband only or also at the side seams.
  • Shell fabric weight, so the shell drapes without clinging when damp.
  • Leg opening width and any side split, which affect movement in wide stances.
  • Pocket positions, including a liner pocket for a phone or key.

Liners that twist or roll are the common complaint. Attaching the liner at more points and matching the stretch of liner and shell usually solves it. See yoga shorts: liners, inseams and leg openings for the details.

Hot yoga shorts

In a heated room the customer wants as little fabric as possible, with no sheerness when wet and quick drying between poses. Hot yoga shorts are usually short, fitted, high-rise and made in nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex. Opacity when wet is the hidden risk: a fabric that passes the dry squat review can show through when saturated. Review the sample damp as well as dry.

Moisture management claims should be backed by a test such as AATCC 195 rather than a marketing phrase. Our hot yoga wear page covers fabric and test choices for heated classes.

Leg openings and fit

The leg opening controls how a short behaves in movement. A fitted leg needs enough grip to stay down but not so much that it digs into the thigh. A loose leg needs enough width for a wide-legged stance without exposing the liner. Grade the leg opening carefully across sizes: an opening that is right in a small can be too tight in larger sizes if the grade is too small.

Write the leg opening relaxed and extended, the thigh measurement and the inseam into the tech pack with tolerances. The partner factory measures the sample against those figures before it reaches you.

Fabric choices

For fitted shorts, nylon/spandex interlock in the 230-280 GSM range is the usual base, with brushed versions for a softer feel. Polyester/spandex costs less and takes sublimation prints. For loose shells, lighter wovens or knits are chosen for drape and drying speed. For any light color, check opacity carefully, because shorts are stretched more tightly over the seat than leggings. The fabric library has the reference ranges.

Gusset, waistband and pockets

Fitted shorts benefit from the same gusset as a legging, because the crotch is under even more tension in a short. A diamond or triangle gusset removes the four-way seam junction and improves movement in wide stances. Waistband choices also carry over: a high-rise band with an internal elastic or a fold-over knit band, with the height confirmed on the tech pack.

Pockets on shorts are popular but need placement care. A side drop-in pocket on a bike short has less fabric to sit in than on a legging, so the pocket depth and the phone it should hold are worth writing down. A hidden waistband pocket is a safer default for very short inseams.

Sample review checklist for shorts

  • Walk, squat and sit in a forward fold; check that the hem stays in place.
  • Check opacity at the seat dry and damp, in every color.
  • On lined shorts, check that the liner stays flat and does not twist after a wash.
  • Measure the leg opening and inseam against the tech pack tolerances.

MOQ and timeline

Cut and sew shorts typically start at 100-300 pcs per style per color, and seamless bike shorts at 300-500 pcs, confirmed in writing for each program. Sizes can usually be mixed within the color quantity. First samples typically take 7-15 days, and bulk typically 30-45 days after sample approval and fabric availability. If your shorts are part of a set, plan the quantities per piece as described on the yoga sets page. When ready, send your shorts brief.

Questions buyers ask

What inseam should yoga shorts have?

It depends on the customer and the practice. Many brands offer a shorter and a longer length. The inseam for each size is confirmed on the tech pack; longer inseams reduce inner thigh chafing.

How do I stop bike shorts from riding up?

Use a wider leg band, a bonded hem with more grip or a knitted hem zone on seamless shorts, and grade the leg opening correctly. Review the sample in a walking test and a seated fold.

Are lined shorts more complex to produce?

Yes. A liner adds a second fabric, extra operations and attachment points. It usually stays on the cut and sew route, with MOQs typically 100-300 pcs per style per color, confirmed in writing.

What should hot yoga shorts be made of?

Usually nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex, fitted and quick drying. Check opacity both dry and damp, and back any moisture management claim with a test such as AATCC 195.
